HKU announced that the project “A portable device for non-invasive and rapid cancer detection using AI-powered optical sensing” received a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. The recognised research was led by Professor Chi-Ming Che and Dr Wei Liu from the Laboratory for Synthetic Chemistry and Chemical Biology Limited (LSCCB).
The technology combines luminescent metal complexes that respond to DNA-damage sites with a miniature spectral device and AI-enabled analysis. HKU has described a saliva-based approach that can generate a result in about ten minutes through a mobile application.
Chemmino is an LSCCB-incubated spin-off in the HKU innovation ecosystem. The company is developing this research direction into portable product systems, bringing together chemistry, sensor hardware, mobile experience and analysis workflow. The research programme continues through further clinical validation as product work progresses.
